Perodua Myvi Extreme 1.5 Launched in Malaysia
Just the Facts:
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Perodua has added a 1.5-liter variant of the second-generation Myvi, Malaysia's best-selling car, which uses the same platform as the Toyota Passo and Daihatsu Boon/Sirion. It is the only 1.5-liter variant in the world on the platform, made possible because Perodua's volume for the Myvi has reached almost 100,000 units a year, thus allowing for engine customization.
The long-stroke all-aluminum DVVT engine is the 3SZ-VE, similar to that in the Alza MPV. Compared to the 1.3-liter engine, output is up 13 percent to 102 horsepower while there's 16 percent more torque at 100 pound-feet. Though the new variant is slightly heavier, the extra output improves the weight-to-power ratio by 11 percent. Manual and automatic transmissions are available, but no CVT (which is available in the Toyota and Daihatsu versions).
The chassis is pretty much the same, but the suspension has been given some additional stiffness to handle the extra weight.
The Myvi 1.5 is being presented with a sportier image and comes in two trims — SE (Special Edition) and Extreme. Cosmetic changes at the front end give it a smarter, sharper look than the Myvi 1.3, and an exclusive yellow color also distinguishes it further.
The Myvi Extreme has a more aggressive body kit, with an extended lower lip attached to the front airdam and a more elaborate diffuser under the rear bumper.
Inside, an all-black color theme is used for sportiness and the equipment level is roughly similar to what's offered in the most expensive version of the Myvi 1.3.
Inside Line says: A new variant exclusive to Perodua shows that Daihatsu is beginning to allow its Malaysian partner more autonomy in product strategy.
- The new 1.5-liter Myvi shares its platform with the Toyota Passo and Daihatsu Boon.
- The new model will account for 45 percent of Myvi sales in Malaysia, which are around 8,000 units a month.
- Domestic pricing is lower than expected compared to the Myvi 1.3.
